The law regulates acquisition, possession, registration, carrying, manufacture, dealing in, and importation of firearms and ammunition.
Possession is legal only if you have the proper license or permit (e.g., a license to own and possess, and — if carrying outside your residence — a valid permit to carry); and the firearm must be registered and meet the law’s definitions of permitted arms.
